May 28, 2019Dorothy was born March 19, 1930, in West Winfield, Pa., a daughter of Frank and Victoria Puz. A 1948 graduate of Winfield High School, Dorothy worked in the office for Shenango China, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Good Year Tire, prior to working at the former Krogers Grocery Store in Boardman. Dorothy was a member of the Holy Family Church in Poland. Proud of her Croatian heritage, Dorothy was a member of the Bessemer Croatian Club, SNPJ No. 771, the Croatian Fraternal Unit and the Croatian Mothers Club of Struthers. Her husband, Steven John Helvak, whom she married June 4, 1956, died Sept. 3, 2010. She leaves two daughters, Vicki (John) Ziegler of Grayson, Ga. and Joann (Russell) Thompson of Poland; two sons, Mark (Donna) Helvak of Woodbridge, Va. and John Helvak of Poland; nine grandchildren, Paul Bazzano, Ashley (Stephen) Leslie, Sarah Thompson, Amanda (Andrew) Bero, Richard (Melissa) Thompson, Savanna Ziegler, Stevie Helvak, Mallory Hanley, and Michael Ziegler; and four great-grandchildren, Jack, Levi, and Evan Bero, and Penelope Thompson. In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a grandchild, Mitchell Hanley; a brother, Vladimir Puz; and a sister, Freda Ruzzine. A private funeral service will be held today at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland with Deacon Paul Lisko officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, also in Poland.
